Escape to Quartzsite AZ_Feb-23-2023

Quail Run RV Community Living, Quartzsite Arizona

I am so over dealing with the crazy unusual winter weather in Why AZ where I had been homesteading from October 11, 2022 to  January 9, 2023, at a spot without full-hookup service which I normally do in deserts, canyons and forest areas because my motorhome is fully self-contained with its own exterior generator that runs everything in the house (i.e. air conditional, refrigerator, interior and exterior lights, receptors, televisions, computer equipment, landline phone, convection microwave and grill).

Otherwise, if I cannot run the generator due to gas level. Portable propane tanks will run stovetop, furnace and refrigerator, while my rooftop solar panel provides light and activate one receptor. At these times, my girls-scout explorer training and backup equipment systems are employed until I need to pack up the motorhome and make a trip to nearby dump stations to dump my gray and black tanks; refill exterior water tank, refill truck gas, exterior and portable propane tanks, as well as depose of house trash bags.

I really love my no-mad lifestyle, as well as the ability to move from one place to another whenever I desire. Like now; upon determining due to cold weather in Why AZ I spent $1,695.00 for excessive propane and gas tank refills. I have lived this lifestyle for the last five-years and I have never spent this much money while homesteading anywhere. Not only do my wallet need a break; my body needs one as well from the unhooking, lifting, refilling, carrying and reconnecting portable propane tanks because it has been so cold in Why AZ.

Therefore, I called Quail Run in Quartzsite, AZ to determine if they had any full-hookup sites for rent at their RV Park (i.e., city water, electricity and sewage}. Carol answered the phone and said, I certainly do. Our full-service sites are $355.00 a month. What date do you want to arrive, she asked.

I will arrive on February 1st, I replied.

Okay, I have scheduled your arrival for February 1st. Safe travelers, she said.

Thanks Carol, I will see you soon, I replied.

On February 1st, 2023, I packed up my motorhome, dumped my tanks and attached my jeep in tow mode behind my motorhome and made a 4-hour drive to Quail Run located in Quartzsite AZ, which is usually a 2-hour-51-minute drive from Why AZ. The trip was made longer because of high winds blowing across highways. You can’t do 65-miles an hour, driving a top-heavy motorhome in high winds which is a Lesson I learned while travelling from Iowa to New Mexico. I was doing 65-miles an hour heading south on a baren highway and was hit by an unexpected wind-tunnel crossing the highway which swung my motorhome completely around heading north in the opposite direction and lane.

Thank God I was the only vehicle on the highway at that time. I immediately recognized this could have been a disaster for me and other drivers on the highway. As a result, I am always attentive to the bowing of trees or tall grass on the sides of highways, as well as the slightest shift or sway of my vehicle and that of 18-wheelers. I have no problems traveling in the slow land and dropping my speed in a safe manner.

Gravel Tow Vehicle Unhitch Area and RV Community

I pulled into Quail Runs’ entrance behind other motorhomes. A man with a clipboard checked us in and directing us with tow vehicles to pull onto a dirt lot to unhook these vehicles and wait for an escort to lead us to our assigned site; help us park into these spaces then return us to the dirt lot to drive our unhitched vehicles to our sites. These guys were friendly, professional and made check-in fun.

Take your time. Once you finish setting up your site you can walk down to that building and finish your check-in process. Hope you enjoy your stay here, Ron my escort said.

The three ladies in the office first names began with a C. So, the joke of the day was, “We see see see you.” They were welcoming, laughed a lot, made you feel like family. They along with grounds workers makes me feel welcome and makes me laugh every day. I am not used to being around some many no-mads or living in crowded areas with lots of people from all walks of life, but it turns out to be fun with a caring environment.

Talk about being busy. Upon final check-in I was provided a February Calendar which showed daily activities for the month which included but not limited to (i.e., Yahtzee, Cribbage, Quirkie, Hand & Foot, Decks of Cards, Taboo, Five Crowns, Mexican Train, Poker, Crafts & Hobbies, Morning Exercise, Block Parties, Bingo, Concealed Carry Class, Painting Class, Pancake Breakfast, etc.).

Further, if you desire you can checkout DVDs, Books, and Puzzles from Clubhouse to enjoy in your own environment. Trash pickup from curb at 10am & 4pm. Morning coffee daily at 6am in Clubhouse. Come wake up and chat with other early risers and walking club. Nope, never done this… Just too early. However, if you are looking for a friendly place to call home; away from your cold winter residence with lots of activities and/or new things to do, as well as make need friends I recommend Quail Run.  This property contains 168 full-hook-up sites, an area for primitive camping, also restrooms, showers, laundry room, recycling, trash pickup, dog run, clubhouse, and office. This is a spacious RV Park.

Happy New Year_2023

The year of 2022 was a difficult year for many lower income-earners, the unemployed and retired American citizens. However, the thought of ushering in a new year, 2023 and being thankful that everyone I know (family and friends) are in good health; still living a life of independence and who I can see, talk to and occasionally visit is something I am truly grateful for. I hope you can celebrate this same blessing as you move through the month of January and the months that follows.

Yes, I too have heard complaints from many whining, politicians, and American citizens, who berates President Biden as if he created inflation, covid-19 and the pending upcoming recession is his fault which was disheartening and a deceitful lie. In case you didn’t know or don’t remember. American has dealt with inflations, recessions, and pandemics before. In fact, while President George W. Bush was in office from 2007 – 2009, we dealt with a great recession which last for 18-months and was recorded in history as the longest American recession since World War II. President Obama became president in 2008, it was under his leadership that our countries’ debts were paid down and America emerged from that recession.

I can list additional and similar events that occurred under previous presidents at which time Americans were more accepting, less vocal and/or less vicious towards fellow Americans.  As Americans, no matter our race or backgrounds. We tighten our belts, spent less, helped our neighbors, show compassion, and have re-bound from situations such as inflation, recession, pandemics, E. cola and more, because we are Americans and we stand together to support and defend every citizen weather by birth or as immigrants, as well as defend our democracy as citizens of this country.

One thing I have noticed throughout my seventy-plus-years is that my fellow American’s stuffer from short-term and selective memories – remembering only those events that benefits them. Usually, these Americans are the folks with the loud mouths or with the biggest bullhorns who always lead a parade of followers to their own demise. Such as the creation of covid-19 charade of death which caused thousands of people to die because they refused to take a covid vaccination and boosters as if vaccination requirements in America was a new type of health fad.

However, leaders that initiated this movement against covid vaccinations and boosters secretly took these vaccinations, as a result they still live while thousands of residents do not. Regretfully, research studies indicate some Americans who contracted Covid-19 developed Long-haul symptoms four weeks or more after recovering from the virus. Further studies suggest Long-Covid occurs less frequently amongst people who contracted Covid after receiving vaccinations.

The bottom line is this: It was under President Biden, Dr. Ashish Jha and Chief Medical Advisor, Anthony Fauci’s leadership that most Americans survived Covid-19. The majority of Americans who took his/her vaccinations and boosters once it became available had little to no lasting health disabilities.  In fact, I was amongst the first to get my vaccinations and boosters.

As a result, I never contracted Covid-19 or any long-haul disabilities. My health and independence are of foremost importance to me. As a result, I have always gotten the following vaccinations: Influenzae, pneumonia, shingles, tetanus. As well as once available I got two-Covid shoots and three-Boosters.

I hope you will live your best life in 2023 based on your own decisions of what is needed in your own life and passions that are important to you. With that said, march to the beat of your own drum, control your anger and distance yourself from crowds of angry people pushing one-sided agenda by its leader.

Return To Why AZ_ Oct 10-Dec 31, 2022

October – December 2022 – Why AZ Homestead

I usually enjoy driving from state-to-state. However, this was the first time I felt exhausted and ready for this trip to be over. Before I recognized where we were on I-10 East heading towards Tucson Arizona. Delores here’s SR-86, we’re arrive in Why Arizona in forty-five minutes.

This turned out to be one heck of a trip. I know it was frustrating for you at times, but it was fun and enlightening for me. This is the first-time I have had an opportunity to travel to so many states in a comforter vehicle that provides all the comforts of a home. I have seen how residents live in different areas; the layout of various states; products grown and harvested in those areas. Also, I have met and talked to many friendly strangers (travelers like us, and residents in states we travelled thru or spend the night in). I will always remember this trip but a little sad this trip is ending so soon but good things in life do eventually end, she said.

I am glad you enjoyed your trip. I really hoped you would. However, I will not forget it either because this journey was beyond frustrating to me. I considered it to be a trip thru hell. I have never dealt with a trip like this in my entire highway travelling life; not even as a property inspector traveling for state-to-state, I replied.

This was my fourth return to Coyote Howl. So, upon entering the entrance and stopping at the available open area where I enjoy homesteading, I was greeted by a few recently returned and seasonal residents which was exciting and welcoming. After refusing offers of help to get us settled back into my space because I was tired. I think I will set here for the night and settle into my spot in the morning I replied. The next day, October 11th, with Delores by my side we settled into my usual spot.

There is nothing like, living in desert areas, canyons, forest, near mountains, state owned land/parks, Bureau of land management, or Army corps of engineer properties. You choose your own spot, stay 14-days for free, use a season pass or make daily or monthly homestead space rental payments. Either way, your homestead location can change instantly. Because you live on, or off grid monthly living expense would be less than living in a stick/mortar-built home or apartment living.

Further, the beforementioned living areas are fluid; meaning if you don’t like people living in the area,  or not excited to behold your space or homestead terrain every morning at sunrise or evenings at sunset. You turn your key in your ignition, wave goodbye, and move farther down the road or to another city or state that offers the same types of living environments.

Delores and I spent a lot of time outdoors with my puppy Echo, walking dirt roads, breathing fresh air, not worried about corvid-19 or other viruses, preparing meals together, talking, watching clouds forming amazing shapes during the day and stars at night. Because Delores mentioned she wanted to take pictures of sunsets and sunrises to residents. Whenever, someone noticed we were not present during beautiful or unusual sky events; someone would rush over and knock on our door. “Ladies grab your cameras; you are missing a beautiful view in the sky. We would grab our camera/cellphone and race outside in outdoors clothes or P.J’s and robs.

On October 18, Delores and I were up early to make the two-hour drive to Tucson AZ, the nearest airport to Why AZ for her trip back to Maryland. I really missed her presents during my two-hour return trip to Why.

Meanwhile, I do not know why. But whenever I am homesteading in the desert. I am awake automatically by 5:00am and asleep by 7 or 8:00pm. This is such a quiet area until a group of Coyotes pass thru occasionally once most residents are in for the night. Did the Coyotes disturb you last night? Residents ask the next morning. Unless my previous dog, Dakota or my current puppy, Echo growls or barks I usually sleep thru these occasional night sounds.

November-December 2022, a very unusual winter in Arizona: For the last five years, I have made winter exodus from Sioux Falls South Dakota to Quartzsite BLM locations (Known as Bureau of Land Management Properties), Canyons and Primitive Campgrounds for the following reasons:  September –  March temperatures of 65 to 87 degrees, beautiful sunrise, sunsets, vivid cloud, and sky colors; Quiet off grid living in unpopulated desert areas near mountains with beautiful terrains.

Upon arriving in Why Arizona on October 10th, the temperature was 75-degrees during the day and around 67-degrees at night. In November and December, the weather changed drastically from the 70’s to the 50’s and below. As a result, from November 13 to December 31, 2022; I spent my time running back and forth across the Highway-86 to the Why Not Travel Store to refill 3-portable propane tanks to ensure the heater in my motorhome continue to operate properly to prevent my motorhome pipes from freezing.

Meanwhile, as I homestead in the cold temperatures of Why AZ, wearing my heavy-duty lined Challenge Series Snow Coat, and various medium-weight jackets over a silk jacket as a liner. I am grateful not to be in Sioux Falls South Dakota as I watch the best views the sky and nature environment has to offer.

Vintage Stones, Stone Ware and School Bell

During my three-year exodus to Why AZ to escape South Dakota Winters. I occasionally made the 10-mile drive to Ajo, a quaint diverse township that proudly showcase its Historic Spanish Colonial Architecture of churches, homes, and open-air circular town park where residents and tourist gather to socialize, enjoy the weather, listen to music, purchase food and wearable merchandise from vendors. As well an patronize an assortment of surrounding businesses such as craft shops, library, gym, historic railway station, post office, dog groomer, bookstore, restaurant, etc.

Rather than site-see, most times my trips to Ajo was to buy grocery items from Olson Market, Family Dollar, Dollar General or quickly wash two loads of clothes at the town’s laundry mate.

On October 13, 2022, to appease my visiting girlfriend, Delores I decided to take her sightseeing around Ajo which turned out to be a great trip.

We were amazed by the amounts of exhibits displayed which includes but not limited to the following:

– Vintage Clothes Irons heated atop a cookstove-1940s to 1950s

Vintage Tools From Generations Past

Traveling Grace_ Oct 4-9, 2022

I have been living my life as a full-time Nomad Traveler since January 2018. During this time, I had one travel companion which was Richard, my brother in August 2021. Therefore, I was beyond shock and taken aback when I answered my phone in October and heard: “Hello, my friend, when are you planning to leave Sioux Falls for the winter?

On October 4th, I replied.

Okay, I will be arriving at your Sioux Falls Airport on Frontier Airline Flight F-9727 at 2:08pm on October 2nd, the caller said.

Stop lying Delores, I replied.

I am not lying my friend. I look forward to seeing you at the airport on October 2nd at 2:08pm, she repeated.

Okay, I will be there on the 2nd, I replied. Although both of us are retired we had never discussed taking a trip or spending anytime together after I sold my Maryland home in our old neighborhood and moving to Sioux Falls SD on January 17, 2018.

Meanwhile the drive back to Why Arizona would be my first drive in my motorhome since having Reverse Shoulder Replacement Surgery to my right shoulder on May 9th, Therefore, I was excited and looked forward to having Delores join me on my return journey to Why Arizona. But I still wondered why now? We hadn’t seen each other since January 17, 2018.

Upon her arrival Delores fell into step beside me as I performed my annual routine of packing up the motorhome for highway travel which included grocery shopping at Wal-Mart to restock motorhome dry/can food cabinets, as well as to stock freezer and refrigerator. Then we rearranged clothes closets and drawers. This process ended with us securing doors and drawers for clothes, medicines, tools, outdoor equipment including chairs, tail-gate dish, outdoor rug, tire levels, water hoses, sewage dump equipment, external electric cord for utility hookup and three portable propane tanks

On October 4th at 9:00am, I drove my motorhome from its spot where we had homestead for the last 6-months to a level road position so we could attach the jeeps towbar to the back of the motorhome and secure it for travel. I hugged my neighbor and we headed for the nearest service station where we brought breakfast and filled up the motorhome’s gas tank. Shortly thereafter, the State of South Dakota and its Nebraska border lay miles behind us.

It was a great day to travel. The sky was a vibrant blue, the sun was bright, air brisk and the highway was wide-open before us. There was Little to no traffic on the highway as we left Sioux Falls, entered Nebraska, and continued our travels during the following three days.

Usually, it’s a three-day drive from South Dakota to my Why Arizona desert location. However, instead of using my cellphone as my GPS, I purchased a new Garmin GPS on October 1st and loaded information as directed via the device and internet instructions. The darn device turned out to have a mine of its own. No matter what I did, it was determined to force me to use the west-coast to reach my destination. Although, I continued to enter an east-coast address. Meanwhile, every time I changed directions and headed East; the device would add additional miles to our trip.

The hardest trips I have ever taken were on the West-Coast which is a route I avoid like not taking Castrol or other laxatives for constipation.  Image the gas usage and wear and tear on your vehicle when you are driving a 30-foot motorhome with a Jeep Wrangler in tow climbing mountain after mountain.

I have only had two parked on the side of the road events in my lifetime which were caused because I miss judged my distance and ran out of gas. But I never had and always dread the possibility of having a roadside breakdown because something broke on my vehicle. As a result,  I am adamant about having my vehicles serviced prior to getting on the highway. This is what I did in September prior to leaving Sioux Falls on October 4th.

I was so irritated with the function of my newly purchased Garmin GPS from Wal-Mart, as well as increasing constant shoulder pain from my previous six-month old surgery and could only take a Tramadol once I pulled into a place off the highway for the night. Delores immediately picked up on my frustrations and not only became my animated passenger seat dancer, singer and motorhome hill climbing Fanclub cheerer. It is now October 7th . I have been driving up and down 6000-7000 Latitude mountains for four days. Pulling off the highway into truck stops before dark to eat dinner and go to bed.

We had just cleared Payton AZ, a small, congested town with crawling traffic thru short timer set traffic lights. At this point we had been driving for two hours when I noticed my motorhome wasn’t climbing mountains as before, also I was smelling heat and steam from where I sit behind the steering wheel. I finally said, Delores hold-on, I need to pull off the highway because something is wrong with the motorhome.

Once I had safely pulled both the motorhome and jeep-in-tow, onto the shoulder of the highway. I pulled the hood release and exited the motorhome side-door to check under the hood  because vehicles were travelling 80 or more miles an hour as they passed us on the shoulder. Though due to shoulder pain it was a struggle to unlatch and lift the hood. Once done, I discovered smoke and heat seem to be coming from everywhere. As a result, I called AAA.

Upon describing my situation and location, my Sioux Falls AAA provider transferred me to a dispatcher near my highway location. Upon explaining the smell and smoke under the hood plus telling him I had a jeep with a dead battery in tow.

“Sounds like you might have a busted water pump. Ms. Brown do you feel safe where you are because I can send a police officer to your location”, he said.

If drivers stay on their side of the road, I am okay, I replied.

Okay it’s going to take a while for me to find a tow provider to transport you because, I need one to tow a heavy load, and this is the weekend so most shops are backlogged, closed, or soon will be closing for the weekend. I don’t want you to worry Ms. Brown, just hang tight; I promise I will get you off the top of that mountain, he said.

While waiting two tow trucks swung in ahead of us. Looked at both the motorhome and jeep; but determined their vehicle couldn’t tow both. At 5:00pm a larger tow-truck pulled in front of us, and a smiling driver quickly jumped to the ground from the cab of his truck and ran around the front of his truck to the shoulder where Delores and I stood.

”Hello ladies, I am Dennis, like Dennis the Menace. Which one of you ladies is Edith Brown, he asked laughing”.

“I am Edith, and this is my friend, Delores”, I replied.

“What is your planned destination”, he asked.

“Why, Arizona”, I replied.

Okay, that’s on the East side. I can tell you now. Looking at the puddle on the ground I am willing to bet, you have a busted water pump and Payton is booked up by RV repair service needs. So, if I tow you back; you will be waiting at least a week before anyone can even look at your rig. Then they might have to order the part which could take another week. Although, it’s going to take a while I suggest I tow you forward to Mesa AZ which is a larger city and closer to your destination. Also, your chance of getting your rig repaired would be a hell of a lot faster. So, Ms. Brown which way do you want me to tow you?

Mesa AZ is fine. Luxury RV, which is on Main Street, has serviced my motorhome in the pass prior to my return trips home to South Dakota, I replied.

Okay, let me get to work getting you hooked up so I can get us off this got dam mountain tops;  we aren’t safe with these fools behind the steering-wheels, Dennis said.

Delores and I stood on the shoulder of the highway watching Dennis hookup my motorhome to his truck and install skaters which took a while because of foolish highway drivers. Further, it was added danger for all of us as Dennis tried to get back onto the highway. Drivers wouldn’t move over though high beam lights were blinking on the top and sides of the tow truck. As well as on the rear of the jeep and sides of my motorhome.

It was around 7:00pm when we arrived in Mesa Arizona. Luxury RV was one-minute from a large shopping center lot which had signs posted, “Over-night parking not allowed”. This is the best and closest place for me to drop your vehicles. It looks like a manager might still be in Ross’s Dress Store, I am going to explain your situation as a traveler and see if he/she will let me drop you here at the curb across from their store until you can get your vehicle repaired across the street at Luxury RV on Monday. Hang tight ladies, I will return shortly, he said as he jumped from the cab of his truck and ran across the parking lot to Ross’s.

Upon his return. “It’s a go ladies; just stay put. Let me review the area before dropping your vehicles. We don’t need any other dangers, he said”.

Once my vehicles were dropped; hookups, tow lights and skaters were removed. Dennis helped Delores and I from the cab of his truck and I completed the required paperwork; he called in my credit card number to his office for clearance. I signed the tow document.

“You two ladies are awesome. I have had all kinds of folks in the cab of this truck who had all types of beliefs and mindsets. Some on drugs, drunk, and/or wanting to argue about religion, LBG residents, emigrants, Democrats vs Republicans, etc. However, the three of us talked about where we grew up, how our parents raised us; the dumb things we did as kids; leaving home as young adults, the crappy jobs we’ve had. What the important things are in life, places we’ve lived and visited (good/bad). I swear this two-hour trip was great. If either of you are in this neck of the woods ever again, whether you have a breakdown or not; here is my card please call me. I would like to see you again, hear your traveling stories or tow you to safety”, Dennis said.

I agree this was a refreshing, funny and uplifting trip. Also, the first time I have road in a front seat as a passage in three or more centuries, I replied laughing.

I enjoyed my backseat ride as well as our conversations. It’s the first time I ever had an entire backseat to myself, Delores added also laughing.

See ladies, that’s what I am talking about Dennis said. We shook hand exchanged business cards and said goodnight.

Monday morning upon contacting Luxury RV turned out to be the greatest disappointment. Although this company has serviced my motorhome on five different occasions, the new service manager, Gregg had no empathy or commitment to ensure a former customer got the emergency service needed to get her back onto the highway. Instead, he said, “We don’t have any water pumps in stock. However, you can call this phone number…. He’s name is Drew; he’s a RV Tech and a friend of mine. Upon leaving a message for Drew. I called Liz, Luxury RV Receptionist and informed her of my situation and location, as well as the beforementioned conversation with Gregg. She was appalled, and immediately provided phone numbers for Larry Miller Ford, Earnhardt Ford, Sandtan Ford and Camping World. All were booked up. However, Camping World said they could get me into their service center next Monday. Upon disconnecting from Camping World, Drew returned my call. I explained my situation to him.

Gosh I wish I could help you. I do everything inside motorhomes but nothing under the hood. When I worked at Luxury RV if we got a job, we couldn’t do we sent it across the street to Japan Motor; they are good folks. I bet they will make the repairs you need. Here is their phone number.

On the first ring, “Hello this is Jazz, how can I help you? A professional voice said.”

Hello Jazz, this is Edith Brown I was towed into Mesa from the top of a 7000 high mountain top on Friday night because of a busted water pump, I replied.

Just a minute, I am going to put Danny on the phone, she said.

Hello this is Danny. How can I help you Ms. Brown? I repeated my previous response to Jazz.

What is your location here in Mesa?

I am on the shopping center parking lot across from Ross’s Dress Shop, I replied.

Great. I am across the street from Luxury RV. You are only a half minute drive which can be done without causing additional problems to your motorhome. Come to me, I’ll be standing outside waiting, he said and hung-up.

A guy was at the apron entranceway to the shop waving. Pull on your flashers and stay there a minute he shouted. Another guy was backing a vehicle out of the service bay and parked it in an outside space. Alright, come to us the other guy shouted. We were greeted by two smiling, good-look men; Danny, and Oscar, who immediately popped the hood and surveyed my motorhome.

Upon entering the office, a smiling Jazz offered cold bottles of water and snacks. We were still chatting when Danny and Oscar entered the office to inform me that I did have a busted water pump which Danny was ordering at that moment as an emergency in hopes of getting it delivered  within the hour. Also, I mentioned that my jeep battery was dead which they had already discovered.

It does not matter the distance I tow my jeep. My battery is always dead whenever I arrive at my destination, I said.

We’ve got a gadget for that. Your dead battery problem occurs because you must turn your ignition on for your wheels to roll which means your battery is engaged and running during the entire trip. However, if will install a shutoff gadget on your battery which disconnects it; you will no longer have a dead battery problem, Oscar replied.

Please install that gadget on my jeep and show me how to use it, I said.

Consider it done, Danny said.

We were back on the highway in 2-1/2 hours later, arriving in Why AZ at 5:32pm, on October 10, 2022.

As a result, to show my gratitude I sent Peace Lily Plants to Liz and Jazz to spruce up their desk and/or waiting areas and express my gratitude for their help.  I also wrote a stellar review regarding my experience and shared the compassion shown to me by Japan Motors manager and staff. However, I wrote a bad review for Luxury RV. But mentioned Liz by name and expressed my gratitude for her concern and desire to help me.

Persuaded to Get Another Dog_ Aug 30, 2022

After my Silver German Shephard, Dakota was euthanized by my vet on April 18th.

I decided that was the end of my desire to own a dog. Although throughout my entire childhood and early adulthood, I grown up with and owned dogs. I did not think owning a pet at this time in my life would affect me one way or another, however the loss of Dakota’s presence has even after packing away all his toys, collars, leash, combs, and brushes in his Duffy bag.

I was really looking forward to not having to rush home because Dakota had been home alone for an hour or more. Not having to get up early to take him out to potty. Instead getting up whenever I desire, not having to visit every park near our homestead areas because Dakota needed to get his exercise.

Not having to constantly sweep and dust because my Motorhome and clothes are always covered with Dakota’s hair; requiring me to carry dog hair removal brushes in my purse, pant pocket, both trucks and jeep to remove excessive dog hair before entering stores, visiting friends, socializing with associates, or going to see a live play.

Once these opportunities surfaced, I never took advantage of any of them. Though I was free for 5-months. My eyes-only leaked tears. I pushed through my shoulder pain to perform daily tasks around my motorhome, as well as do my rehab exercises. Further, Sioux Falls has over eighty beautifully easily accessible, well-maintained parks. During this time, I did not visit any of them.

During office visits with my Doctors and Physical Therapists, Dakota always became a part of our discussion which usually went as follows: Edith you invested so much money in trying to cure Dakota of the awful disease he was born with for the last three years and instead of getting better he got worst. It was time to let him go.

There is no doubt in my mind, Dakota knew you loved him and tried to make him better. He would want you to get another dog, not to replace him or his memories. But because you need a travelling companion and a protector that would make strangers who might want/attempt to harm you think twice before approaching; an alert from a dog is all you need to call 911 or grab a weapon to defend both of you.

As a result, on August 30, I contact Rod, the breeder to determine if he had any males in the litter. Hello Rod, my name is Edith Brown. My physical Therapist, at Prairie Rehab in Sioux Falls gave me your phone number and address. Do you have any German Shepard and Poodle Puppies left?

Yes, he is, my friend and told me about you and your need for a replacement dog. Also, he has been trying to help me get rid of these puppies. I have one male left. If you want him, I will hold him for you if you can pick him up in the next three-days. Currently I have two litters which totals 19-puppies. I cannot afford to feed all of them. So, the sooner I can get rid of some, the better-off my older dogs and I will be, he replied laughing.

How far are you from me in Sioux Falls, I asked.

I live in Worthington, Minnesota which is an hour drive from you. Once you cross the border, you take the first exit on your right which will bring you to my street, he replied.

This will be my first long road trip since shoulder surgery May. So, it may take me a little longer than an hour, I said.

That is okay. I will be here whenever you arrive, he replied.

I am on my way, I will see you soon, I said.

It was amazing to arrive on farmland and see cows, older dogs, and puppies. A black puppy was out of the pen and running across the field galloping toward a man heading towards him like a horse. The man stopped and the puppy ran and sit at the man’s feet. The man bends down and scooped the puppy up in his arm. At this point I was sure, this was Rod. I parked my pickup truck and got out.

Hello Edith, you made it here less than an hour. That shoulder must be healing well, he said.

Right now, my shoulder and arm feel tired and heavy, I replied.

I am sure that is the result of your tight grip on the steering wheel. On the way back do not grip the steering wheel; you know how to drive so just rest both hands on the steering wheel. If you need to turn, do it gently without pressure. Here is your new furry friend. Wait let me show you this. He put the puppy on the ground and gave the following commands: Sit, lay, stay, come, no, leave it, he said.

The puppy performed every command as spoken. That is good Rod, six things I only need to reinforce I replied.

He is smart when he wants to be. Otherwise, he is a hard-head little boy. So, make him work to remember his commands. Also, he can play ball by himself which keeps him busy for an hour or more, he said.

I had no idea what he would look like. However, I did not expect German Shepherd colors on his paws and legs. Meanwhile there is a strange cuteness about him, I said.

Laughing, well that is a wonderful way to say it. I am curious to see what he is going to look like as he gets older. If it is not going to be much of a burden and you take pictures of him, send me picture and text, letting me know how the both of you are doing, Rod replied.

Did you name him I asked?

Nope why bother: owners will rename them anyway. I am going to put him on the rubber floor mate in the back. Hopefully, he will not get sick on the ride back home. He has not had anything to eat since this morning, he replied.

Meanwhile, I have returned to potty training, dealing with puppy diarrhea, administering doses of Kaopectate, boiling rice and chicken, walking Echo, playing ball, tug of war and obedience training. I find these to be harder than in the past. I might be a little too old for this type of dog training because I am always tired especially when I must pull an all-nighter because of diarrhea.

I hope not. Also, Rod you can expect to get pictures and notes about this furry child from me soon. We shook hands and I left. We were riding for about thirty-minutes. Oh god, puppy dog I smell you. I know you pooped by there, I said.

A Shepadoodle which is a German Shepherd & Poodle Mix

Echo is different from all my pass dogs which were German Shepherds, a Chow Chow, Saint Bernard, and a Dachshund. When I talked to them, they listened and at less attempt to perform a given command. Not this one…. Echo pretends not to hear my voice as he does what he wants. Later, rolls his eyes as to say, “Did you say something to me?”

My doctors were tickled to death to see pictures of Echo. Oh my god how precious. Look at those eyes, ears, and two-tone colors. He is going to be a smart dog. German Shepherds and Poodles are both smart. I bet he will be double smart. Nope, not yet. I think I must be dealing with the poodle side right now. Keep hoping the German Shepherd trait will show its presence soon, I replied.

Upon our arrival for his wellness check on September 2nd, Dakota’s old Vet, Sarah and her staff were captured by Echo’s big brown eyes and quickness to rush into each arm and cuddle while licking arms, hands, and faces. Sarah’s lab assistant just had to take Echo next door so grooming staff could see him. They had the same reactions towards him. Vet, Sarah said, “Echo is going to be a fast-growing puppy. Look at his paws and legs. He will be twenty-seven” to twenty-nine” tall.”

Sarah is right regarding her height prediction. Echo is 6-months old, and he is taller and longer than his cage, and almost the length of my couch.

Echo – Taller Than Cage
Six-Month Old Echo Almost as Long as Couch

Meanwhile, when I give Echo a command and he does not respond; if I start towards him, he has no problem running towards his cage; ducking his head as he dives inside. He knows once he is inside his cage, I cannot get him out. Because he is too heavy for me to lift, and too long to jerk out the cage door. So, there he lays while watching me with his big brown eyes.

Echo is stubborn, hard-headed, and always bothering my stuff. I do not trust him to be in the motorhome uncaged. Further, Echo is enchanted by the privacy draperies hanging behind the seats in the driver pit. Therefore, when I take a shower; I ensure Echo is in his cage otherwise I could be exiting the bathroom naked in front of a shocked audience.

Slow Return from Shoulder Surgery_ July-Sept 2022

Sioux Falls Fairground Homestead

First, I would like to say, “Don’t let any doctor tell or convince you that shoulder surgery is an uncomplicated process resulting in little to no pain with quick recovery time. None of this is true!

My first right-shoulder surgery was an external Arthroscopic repair which occurred on June 30, 2021. But my second surgery was a Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty Surgery (the only option) occurred on May 9, 2022. However, both surgeries were painful with the second being the most severe. Further, my first Physical Therapy session begin at Prairie Rehab Center on May 17th, and end in December 2022, sometime before Christmas. I knew I would be dealing with pain for an exceptionally long time which is still a reality.

However, because of my lifestyle as a full-time motorhome dweller and need to be far away from Sioux Falls prior to the arrival of winter, my therapist approved my release from Rehabilitation sessions on September 27, 2022, with pages of home rehabilitation exercises to perform daily to help strengthen my joints so I could accomplish tasks I needed to preform daily around my motorhome.

I was surprised to discover two of my physical therapists had scheduled to visit my motorhome to determine if they could suggest and improvise new techniques to prevent reinjury to my shoulder and wrist. But enable me to accomplish most my daily tasks. This was certainly an interesting visit and workout session. However, there was no effortless way to carry refilled propane tanks or lift the hood of my truck overhead to check fluid levels and make refills. Other than to take my motorhome to a service center.

As a results, I learned new skills and was able to take both the motorhome and jeep to service centers for the following: Oil changes, new filters for both vehicles (truck and jeep) and motorhome generator. As well as tire pressure checks/new tire replacements including battery checks or replacements for motorhome truck, house, and jeep batteries. Also, the rear stabilizing bar on the jeep which is my tow vehicle had to be done by my vehicle service center.

Ensuring my vehicles are well serviced and ready to make my annual exodus from Sioux Falls prior to the arrival of Winter is a regular goal for me. My plan is to leave Sioux Falls on October 4th.

Sometimes Life Is Like Rough Seas_Jun_17-2022

South Dakota Homestead

Today as I sit on my couch looking out the open door of my motorhome, listening to birds chirping in two nearby trees on my chosen homestead RV Spot. It dawned on me May 7th is the first 77-degree spring day we have had since I returned home to South Dakota on April 1, 2022.

When we pulled out of Why Arizona on March 29, 2022, it was a beautiful 73-degree sunny travelling day until we ran into a windstorm prior to entering Demings New Mexico. News reporters were warning drivers of motorhomes, buses or those towing fifth-wheels, trailers and boats to slow-down because winds were 60-miles an hour.

Prior to hearing this report, I knew I was heading into high winds, because my 30-foot motorhome begin to sway close to the hammer and shoulder lane lines. Although, I had already dropped my speed from 70 to 55-miles an hour; I was still having problems staying in my lane. So, when I arrived in Demings, I was driving 50-miles an hour. My neck, shoulders, arms, hands and back were in pain from my sheer determination to control my home on wheels until I could safely get off the highway.

Upon seeing a sign for Marathon Gas Station, I took the upcoming exit; drove across the outer gas station lane blocking the first two gas pumps stopping at the third to refill my motorhome tank. While my tank was being filled, I went inside the station and asked the station attendant if I could spend the night on his property. “You certainly can. Just pull over to the far-right side of the property perimeter, he said.” Thank you, sir, I replied. Dakota and I ate dinner in our motorhome and turned in for the night.

The next morning the windstorm was over. Upon exiting my motorhome to take Dakota out to potty, I discovered a motorhome and two motor coaches had joined me on the gas station’s lot during the night. After our walk around the stations’ perimeter and return to our motorhome, I put food and water in Dakota’s bowls then went inside the station to buy a large cup of coffee and a bagel. At 7:00am, we were back on the highway driving 70-miles an hour heading for home. My trip from Why Arizona to South Dakota cost $725.00 for unleaded gas. I can’t imagine how much this trip would have cost if I was driving a diesel motorcoach.

Meanwhile I must say, it was a shock to arrive in South Dakota and discover temperatures were in the 40’s, it was windy, rainy and temperatures regularly drop to the 20’s causing water hose to freeze at night. Winds were so high blowing across South Dakota highways that my two-door, soft-top jeep was whipped in and out of lanes like a weightless empty buggy. As a result, I had to retrieve my Ford pickup truck from my storage garage and put the jeep inside so I could safely travel around South Dakota.

Also, constant trips back and forth to propane stations to have three portable 20-gallon propane tanks refilled in order to run the furnace, have hot water and use the stovetop in my motorhome was exhausting. In addition, we had four tornadoes travel through this area at 30 to 50-miles an hour. It seemed like winter was never going to end.

I have returned home in April for the last five-years and have never experienced or had to deal with a season like this. Further for the record. Motorhomes are made like cars. They are light weight with little installation which makes it easy and fun to drive on highways. But these vehicles are not designed for owners to live in during harsh winter seasons. Therefore, most full-time No-Mads like me travel to other areas before winters begin in our home states.

Like most of you I have dealt with rough seas in my life as well which included a right shoulder rotator-cuff repair surgery on June 30, 2021. However, the shoulder was reinjured on September 12, 2021, due to a fall.

On April 18, 2022, my beloved Silver German Shepherd, Dakota was euthanized due to contracting a severe yeast infection which didn’t respond to medication. On May 9, 2022, I had a second surgery on right shoulder which was an invasive Reverse Right Shoulder Surgery to eliminate damaged joints caused by my fall in September 2021. Then cataract and stent surgery on both eyes on May 24, 2022. These were my rough sea events.

Dakota, 6-weeks old
3-years old, March 14,

I am so far behind on sharing travel blog stories, posting reviews and working on my next novel. So, I plan to work around shoulder pain as much as possible to play catchup. Although my physical therapy sessions for shoulder healing is scheduled throughout the month of December.  I plan to be out of South Dakota in October before winter returns.

Campground Entrance
My Hide-out @ Coyote Howls Campground

Once my 14-days were exhausted at Holly Jolly I decided to leave Quartzsite AZ for Why AZ because the thrill of traveling to this area every year has deemed for me due to recent experiences of theft of personal properties, as well as crowded public and camping spaces caused by foot and vehicle traffic.

It used to be refreshing to arrive in Quartzsite ahead of rock and gem show collectors or people looking to sell rocks, gems, and jewelry he/she created to visiting buyers and store owners.

Tyson Wash BLM Campground Quartzsite

During this time, I enjoyed walking in the forest seeing wildlife and smelling fresh air. Sitting in a chair near my RV surveying mountains at a distance, listening to the birds, watching night stars, sunset, sunrise, and the moon.  I worked on new novels, wrote an array of reviews, performed workout routines in the gym and visited with returning friends. At this point I doubt I will return to Quartzsite anytime soon.

In January 2018, while visiting Saddle Mountain, a landmark peak in Tonopah AZ. One morning, I was sitting in my motorhome, drinking a cup of coffee, and looking out my window. I saw a woman walking up the dirt road towards my motorhome. She would take a few steps; bend down to retrieve something from the ground and drop it in a pouch hanging from her shoulder. The fact, she kept bending and picking up something piqued my interest and the fact she wasn’t making too much progress as a walker. I walked outside and said, “Good morning my name is Edith Eveon Brown, what are you doing?”

Saddle Mountain Tonopah AZ

She stood up, laughed, and said, “Good morning, Edith my name is Rose. I collect rocks and cactus to create unique jewelry designs which I sell to jewelry owners and customers at trade stores and flea markets.”

Wow Rose, it’s nice to meet you and I am impressed. Rose showed me her rock collection, and told me how she clean, cut, polish/spray her rocks or cactus to create jewelry.

Rose also told me about Coyote Howls Rv Park in Why AZ which is where she lived. The area was in the middle of nowhere and was home to many friendly artist (i.e., sculptor, novelist, jeweler, poet etc.). In fact, when I decided to come to Quartzsite to collect rocks; I had been in Why for two days and was concerned about leaving my small bus which I am renovating and can’t be secured to prevent theft. Upon mentioning my design, a guy working on an easel nearby said, “My name is Leroy. I’ll watch your place until you return”. I turned around and said, “Leroy my name is Rose, I’ll be gone for five days here are the keys to my place. Thank you. I packed a few things and drove here, she said.

Now, you know why I showed up at Why AZ in August 2019, and again this year after leaving Holly Jolly Campground on January 21, 2022, stopping other places prior to arriving at Coyote Howls Rv Park East on January 28, 2022, where I remained until March 29 when I left to return to South Dakota.

Holly Jolly Sunset

Upon leaving B-10 Campground I stumbled upon Holly Jolly a 14-day free stay BLM designated primitive campground for tent, rv, trailer, fifth wheel and camping van owners which is also located in Quartzsite. Though no utilities (i.e., water, electric or sewage dump stations) are offered to beforementioned users living at the campground.

The Pit Stop, a facility less then 5-minutes away offers freshwater stations for campers to refill his/her water jugs or freshwater tanks. As well as inground stations to personally dump your own waste tanks and have portable or mounted propane tanks refilled by a service provider.

The host was extremely friendly. We talked for the longest time and was joined by a current resident, who was also friendly and confirmed my impression of the host.

There is a lot of land here. You are free to homestead wherever is comfy for you. If you don’t like your chosen spot, you are free to move around until you found a spot that works for you. Also, once your 14-days end. You must pack up and leave this property.

You are allowed to stay 14-days free at another BLM campground located 25 or more miles from this location. Then return to this property for another 14-days after you have stayed at another place for an additional 14-days, the host said.

He gave me a 14-day pass to display in my window which showed my arrival and my scheduled date to exit the campground. I thanked him and drove to a wide-open uninhabited space. A few days later I was joined by a few Canadians who were gracious neighbors and became fast friends.
